Cheapest groceries in Qatar with weekly flyers

The short answer

Qatar has flyers from Al Meera, LuLu, Carrefour, Family Food Centre and SPAR, and others. Open two or three each week, compare the price per kilo or litre, and check which branches take part before you drive.

Quick facts

Chains to compare in Qatar

Qatar Living reviews LuLu, Carrefour, Al Meera and Monoprix. Flyer listings from WowDeals also show Family Food Centre and SPAR, with current catalogues. These are the chains we confirmed.

Qatar Living describes Al Meera as strong for neighbourhood top-ups, with branches across the country, and Monoprix as the place for premium and imported goods. LuLu, it says, suits large monthly family shops.

What current flyers look like

A WowDeals listing shows Al Meera Weekly Offers Vol 7 running from 27 September to 7 October across 61 branches. Family Food Centre had Weekend Fresh Offers until 3 October in Al Daayen, Al Rayyan and Doha. SPAR had Weekly Picks until 7 October, and Carrefour had Weekly Deals until 6 October.

The dates do not match. That is useful: one chain's offers often end while another's start, so you can shift your shop to whichever flyer is live.

How to compare unit prices

The headline price on a flyer is for the pack, and packs come in different sizes. The fair way to compare is the price per kilo, per litre or per 100 grams. Many shelf labels print the unit price in small type. If not, work it out yourself.

For example, 2 litres of cooking oil at QAR 15 is QAR 7.50 per litre. A 5 litre bottle at QAR 34 is QAR 6.80 per litre. The bigger bottle wins on unit price, but only if you will use it. These numbers are an illustration, not current prices.

  1. Find the pack price and the pack size on the flyer.
  2. Convert the size to one unit: kilos, litres, or 100 g for small items.
  3. Divide the price by the size.
  4. Do the same for the other chain, or the other brand.
  5. Check the dates and whether the price needs a membership card.
  6. Pick the lowest unit price that you will actually finish before it expires.

Loyalty cards and apps

According to Qatar Living, LuLu registration is free through the app or in store, and Carrefour MyClub shows member-only prices on shelf labels and sends personal coupons through its app. Discounts are taken at checkout rather than banked as points. All the programmes it covers are free, and a Qatar mobile number is usually needed.

Check the Qatar Living article for the latest summary, and then check each app, since terms change.

Practical tips

  • Match your shop to weekend flyers for fresh produce, and to the longer catalogues for staples.
  • Check the branch list. Al Meera lists its participating branches on the flyer.
  • Use the loyalty app to find member prices before you queue.
  • Split a monthly shop only if the two chains are close to each other.
  • Look at quantity limits per customer on promotions.
  • Ask the cashier to scan the membership before the total is final.

How Fawz helps

Fawz is not released yet, and you can join the waiting list. When it is out, it compares supermarket flyer prices, so you see where an item is cheapest without opening six flyers.

At the till, Fawz suggests which of your cards or memberships to use. It also tracks minimum monthly spend and caps, so your grocery shop helps you reach the higher cashback rate. It never stores card numbers or bank logins and never reads SMS.
