Quick facts
Chains to compare in Bahrain
Wikipedia lists chains operating in Bahrain, including Al Awafi, Megamart, Bahrain Pride, Al Jazira, HyperMax, LuLu Hypermarket, Midway and Nesto, and says Al Awafi, Midway, HyperMax, LuLu, Bahrain Pride and Megamart are among the largest.
Al Jazira Supermarket is described as a Bahraini retail chain with 15 stores. Flyer sites list offers from Ramez, LuLu and Nesto.
Carrefour is now HyperMax
Khaleej Times reports that Carrefour closed in Bahrain on 14 September 2025, and that Majid Al Futtaim announced six HyperMax stores in Bahrain. Old Carrefour flyers can still show up in searches, so check the brand name and date.
Reading flyers in a small market
Bahrain is small, so you can compare several chains without a long drive. Open the flyers of a local chain and a regional chain for the same week, and put them side by side.
Offers often focus on fresh produce, meat and household items. Check whether the offer is for one branch or for all.
How to compare unit prices
The headline price on a flyer is for the pack, and packs come in different sizes. The fair way to compare is the price per kilo, per litre or per 100 grams. Many shelf labels print the unit price in small type. If not, work it out yourself.
For example, 1 litre of milk at BHD 0.450 and a 2 litre pack at BHD 0.800 gives BHD 0.450 and BHD 0.400 per litre. Keep three decimals when you compare, because the gaps are small. These numbers are an illustration, not current prices.
- Find the pack price and the pack size on the flyer.
- Convert the size to one unit: kilos, litres, or 100 g for small items.
- Divide the price by the size.
- Do the same for the other chain, or the other brand.
- Check the dates and whether the price needs a membership card.
- Pick the lowest unit price that you will actually finish before it expires.
Practical tips
- Compare one local chain and one regional chain every week.
- Search for HyperMax, not Carrefour, for the former Carrefour stores.
- Check LuLu Happiness for member prices if you shop at LuLu.
- Read branch lists, because small chains may not run an offer at every store.
- Check the date range before you go.
- Keep three decimals when you do the maths.
How to find the cheapest basket in Bahrain
- Collect the flyersOpen the current flyer from two or three chains that are close to you, and check the dates.
- Write your listList the items you buy every week, with the size you normally buy.
- Work out the unit priceDivide each pack price by its size in kilos or litres.
- Check conditionsLook for membership requirements, limits per customer and branch lists.
- Split the shop if it paysBuy the cheapest staples at one chain and fresh items at another, if the trip is worth it.
How Fawz helps
Fawz is not released yet, and you can join the waiting list. When it is out, it compares supermarket flyer prices, so you see where an item is cheapest without opening six flyers.
At the till, Fawz suggests which of your cards or memberships to use. It also tracks minimum monthly spend and caps, so your grocery shop helps you reach the higher cashback rate. It never stores card numbers or bank logins and never reads SMS.
