How cashback credit cards work in Qatar

CardQatarLast checked

The short answer

In Qatar, cashback cards often pay a higher rate the more you spend in a month, with a monthly cap on each category. Some banks use reward points instead of cashback. The examples below come from Doha Bank and Commercial Bank of Qatar pages. They are examples only, and we do not rank or recommend any card. All amounts are in QAR.

Quick facts

The basic idea

A cashback card returns part of your spend. In Qatar, as elsewhere, the details sit in the terms: which categories earn, how much you must spend, and the monthly cap. Some banks do not pay cash at all and give points that you redeem. We checked two banks' own pages on 2 October 2026. We could not open QNB's pages, so QNB is not covered.

Example: Doha Bank Cashback Mastercard World

Doha Bank's page for this card shows rates that rise with your monthly spend. For groceries it lists 3% at QAR 2,500 to 7,500 of spend (maximum QAR 100 a month), 5% at QAR 7,500 to 15,000 (maximum QAR 200) and 10% at QAR 15,000 and above (maximum QAR 400).

Online delivery, telco bills, fuel, ride-hailing and school fees follow the same tier structure with up to 10% at the top tier. The page lists a top-tier monthly cap of QAR 200 or QAR 400 depending on the category.

Digital entertainment and movie tickets earn a flat 50% cashback that starts at QAR 7,500 of spend, with a maximum of QAR 100 a month, rising to QAR 200 a month at QAR 15,000 and above.

The page lists eligibility as a salary of QAR 15,000 to under QAR 30,000, or a deposit of QAR 100,000 to under QAR 250,000. Check the bank for current requirements.

What tiers mean in practice

A spend tier means your rate depends on your total monthly spend, not just one shop. Under the Doha Bank structure above, someone spending QAR 2,000 a month would be below the first tier listed, and someone spending QAR 8,000 would be in the 5% tier. The tier boundaries matter, so it can be worth moving a purchase to this card to reach the next one.

The caps matter as well. At 5% with a QAR 200 cap, the groceries category stops paying once you have earned QAR 200, which is QAR 4,000 of grocery spend. The page lists the caps as monthly maximums, so check the bank's terms for exactly how they apply.

Example: Doha Bank Visa Signature Everyday Cashback

Doha Bank's launch announcement for this card in July 2021 said 10% cashback on groceries, online deliveries, mobile top-ups, fuel, ride-hailing apps and school fees, and up to 50% on digital entertainment subscriptions and movie tickets. The announcement does not state caps, minimum spend or fees, and it is old, so check the current card page before relying on it.

Example: Commercial Bank of Qatar rewards

CBQ's rewards FAQ describes points, not cashback. Diners Club cardholders earn 1 point per QAR 15 spent and Visa and Mastercard holders earn 1 point per QAR 20.

The FAQ says government merchants, insurance, charity, dynamic currency conversion, EU card-present transactions and local Qatar e-commerce through overseas-listed merchants are excluded. Regular points expire 2 years after they are awarded, and joining bonus points expire after 90 days. Points can be redeemed for travel, shopping vouchers or Qatar Airways Avios transfers. Joining bonus points need minimum spend within 90 days.

Points versus cashback

Points can be worth more or less than cash depending on how you redeem them, and they can expire. Cashback is simpler. When you compare, work out what a point is worth when you redeem it, and what you must spend to earn it.

Habits that help

  • Read each card's tiers and caps in the bank's current terms.
  • Check which categories count, and which are excluded.
  • Watch for expiry dates on points.
  • Pay your balance in full so interest does not wipe out the rewards.

How Fawz helps

Fawz is not released yet, and people join a waiting list. When it is out, it tracks your minimum monthly spend and caps, so you can see which tier you are in and how much cap is left.

It suggests which of your cards to use at the till. Fawz never stores card numbers or bank logins and never reads SMS.
